ALL ABOUT SHIPS

In keeping with the maritime theme of our organisation, our Development Framework splits the KJ project  into individual strands which when taken together, will form the backbone of our efforts.   It may seem a bit cheesey, but it works for us.

Craftsman Ship

KJ’s restoration will be used as an opportunity to learn the practical skills necessary to keep her sailing.  A comprehensive in-house training curriculum, biased towards classic seamanship and ship management, will be developed with input from similar organisations. This will necessitate the creation of an online digital skills archive which can serve as a reference for similar restoration works.

Guardian Ship: KJ's past and her future.  This programme focuses on UK Maritime History as it relates contextually to KJ and will involve the creation of a digital archive containing a comprehensive history of the vessel, images, films and case studies of those who have been involved with her.

Citizen Ship:  Encouraging people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to be part of something bigger than themselves. The focus of this programme is social cohesion and inclusion through volunteering

Leader Ship

Providing a challenging environment for mixed-ability young people who may not have had the best start in life.  This project focuses on social equality and personal development.

Young people who undertake the Leader Ship programme will be trained to crew KJ in Tall Ship races and the many maritime events in the UK and Europe during the Summer.

Historic Ship

KJ is a nationally important vessel and this strand of the project concentrates on her physical 'well being' and authenticity.

Seamanship

This strand is about learing the ropes - literally.  It covers the seamanship skills needed to keep KJ sailing and covers everything from tying knots to skippering.  This is also the devilish fun part of the plan and is aimed to keep all the skills learned fresh – and that means lots of sailing and practical activities.

Crewmanship:
This strand of the project covers the ‘team’ aspect of big ship sailing and the sense of camaraderie that is fostered when undertaking shared experiences as a group.  We know that great things can be achieved by bringing 'old hands' and 'young blood' together through shared experiences in a physically tough and sometimes mentally challenging environment.

Partner Ship:

An Outreach programme will promote KJ and form links with Companies, Organisations and individuals to ensure a well supported future for her and her community.

KJ, as a ‘Dream Boat’ will provide subsidised rest/respite trips and sailing activities for disadvantaged or less-abled young people and their carers.  This programme is focused on providing an opportunity to experience the recuperative power of being at sea and is wholly about giving  guests  a wonderful and memorable experience.
