About Us

Kenya Jacaranda has been providing sailing adventures and life-changing experiences for disadvantaged young people from our Community for over 50 years.  She has only survived this long thanks to the support of generous people and organisations who have, over the years, kindly donated funds, services and time.

Laid up since 2006, and in need of restoration and modernisation, she is now in the hands of a newly emerging charity, Kenya Jacaranda Heritage Sailing who are all about preserving KJ by finding her a new career for the 21st Century.

Our aim is to 'press into service' people of differing abilities from all walks of life to take responsibility for a part of her restoration, maintenance and future tall-ship sailing activities.

Who we are

Kenya Jacaranda Heritage Sailing (KJHS)  is a volunteer-led group of maritime enthusiasts passionate about restoring the Kenya Jacaranda (KJ) and encouraging more people to embrace the challenges of operating and supporting a large traditional working vessel.

We are from different backgrounds and of differing abilities but share a love of our common maritime heritage and a firm belief that crewing on a big traditional ship is probably the greatest team ‘game’ of them all.

Our Vision

Our vision is to see  Kenya Jacaranda taken into community ownership and undertaking a broad range of ship-based activities which will enable the Thameside community to get out of their armchairs and embrace their inner sailor.

We are already being supported by a diverse network of individuals, Companies, Organisations, maritime professionals and enthusiastic volunteers who share our passion for ‘living’ maritime history and traditions.
